Fit Like?
(traditional Scottish greeting!)

They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our books! Inspired by the rebellious and independent spirit of Scottish warriors like William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and our own ancestors, Braveheart Books is committed to providing book lovers with freedom from online shopping and independence from LED screened devices – like the one you are reading from at this exact moment!

Located in a cozy and quaint Civil War era general store and post office on the border of the Capital Region of NY and the Berkshires of MA, the bookstore was founded in 1987 by beatnik Dan Lorber and was named after a Jack Kerouac poem. Over the decades, “Down in Denver Books” became a haven for locals and travelers looking for a unique and quirky shopping experience.

In 2015, the Hendry family originally from Aberdeen, Scotland heard that there was a bookstore for sale in the middle of nowhere, US of A. The Hendrys - with brave hearts -decided to make the move to Stephentown, NY and take over Down in Denver Books for its “second edition.” In 2019, the name of the bookstore was changed to Braveheart Books.

Braveheart Books sells an eclectic variety of gently used books. The store’s hours vary with the season. (Please see below for our current schedule) We hope you’ll follow our adventures on Facebook and Instagram at @braveheartbooksny

Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again - Bon Accord!

(14th century motto on the coat of arms of the Hendrys' hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland)
